Today, we celebrate an inspiring story of transformation from our partner SEArcular by Greencore, who recently opened a renovated school in Surabaya, Indonesia, aiming to improve the lives of waste pickers children and families within the community. This initiative reflects the deep-rooted values of collaboration, sustainability, and education that we stand for. It is an excellent example of how we can collectively build a brighter future for underprivileged children.
A Community Driven Collaboration With Sustainable Focus
This remarkable project in Surabaya was made possible through the partnership between SEArcular by Greencore and Happy Hearts, two organisations committed to social and environmental impact. Together, they embarked on a mission to revitalise an underprivileged school’s facilities, creating a safer and more inspiring learning environment. Through SEArcular’s dedication and Greencore’s generous donation and volunteer efforts, the school renovation has become a beacon of hope and change for the community.
Thanks to SEArcular Greencore’s generous donations and hands-on volunteer support, the school now has two bright and spacious classrooms, new educational toys, a new toilet, a handwashing area, and brand-new furniture and play equipment. The school is now able to welcome 50% more students, providing quality education to children who previously had limited access. By upgrading these facilities, the project has transformed the school into a vibrant and welcoming environment, giving the waste pickers’ children access to quality education that was previously out of reach.
This renovation was not just about providing a physical space, it was about creating a sustainable future. TK Bina Anaprasa was rebuilt using recycled plastic, making it a shining example of eco-friendly construction. It stands as a beacon of how sustainability and community support can go hand-in-hand to create a lasting impact.
Empowering Change Together
While Plastic Collective’s involvement is not directly linked to the school construction, we are incredibly proud to support SEArcular by Greencore in other ways. Our collaboration on the recycling centre in Java aligns with our shared mission of reducing plastic pollution, improving community welfare, and promoting circular economies. By working together on these initiatives, we contribute to a broader vision of sustainability and social development, highlighting the importance of multi-faceted approaches to community upliftment.
Our bond with SEArcular goes beyond just addressing plastic waste; it is about building long-term partnerships that can foster positive changes on multiple fronts. This school opening in Surabaya exemplifies the kind of impact that can arise from such collaborations. This project is not just a school; it’s a learning environment that reflects what can be accomplished when we work together to support the people at the heart of waste management efforts. It is a powerful message to brands and supporters around the world, you too can invest in initiatives that drive meaningful change for communities and the environment.
Words from Max M Craipeau CEO of Greencore
“I was deeply moved to see the smiles of these underprivileged children, who should be proud of their waste picker parents for their role in preserving the environment of our wonderful Indonesia . This initiative is not just about rebuilding a school, but about empowering a community that is making a real difference.”
A Celebration of Positive Change
This school renovation is more than just a structural upgrade; it symbolises the value placed on the waste picker community’s contributions. SEArcular by Greencore and Happy Hearts opening this school has not only provided much-needed infrastructure improvements but also created an environment where children of waste pickers feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. This initiative directly addresses social conditions in the region by offering a pathway for education and a brighter future for those who play a crucial role in managing plastic waste.
The school is a key part of SEArcular’s broader mission to support waste pickers and their families, recognising that they are the backbone of many recycling projects. By creating educational opportunities for their children, this project uplifts the entire community and acknowledges the importance of the waste pickers’ contributions.
